| I had a roommate once, we were driving home from some bar we went to, supposedly had a good band. The mandatory seatbelt law had just been passed and I got pulled over for it. I was doing nothing else wrong, just the damn seat belt. I opened my window and the cop says "sir, were you wearing your seatbelt at the time I signaled you over?" I lied, said yes, but that my shoulders are so big the strap isn't visible. Without missing a beat, my roomie says "I wasn't, it's against my constitutional rights!" I thought the cop was going to write me a book of cites, and give him one for his mouth,I was white knuckling the steering wheel I was so pissed off.....the cop had this look on his face, "I have you dead to rights, but I pity you because of the company you keep" kind of look...the b***** wrote the ticket, of course! |

American airbags are bigger, more powerful and arguably more dangerous than the ones we have in Europe and the UK. Euro-bags are meant to be used in conjunction with seat belts.
Maybe it should be optional to wear a seat belt only if you can prove you have private medical insurance and won't cost the taxpayer when you are injured.
But what's my opinion worth? I ride a motorbike. |

But there is still the inconvenience to the taxpayer when the roads are closed. Also the 'delightful' task of scraping a damaged body off the road for the paramedics. |

| There is a flip side to the seat belt thing. In roll overs, they actually do more harm than good, and in a fire situation after a roll over, that highway is going to be shut down. the taxpaying motoring crowd will be inconvenienced, and there will beb odies getting dragged out, crispy or otherwise. I think overall, seatbelts have their purpose, but I think FORCING it, is just Big Brother going for revenue enhancement. |

| Seatbelts save a hell of a lot more people than they seriously hurt/save. In my opinion they should always be worn in a car on the road. If you want to die then don't wear one. But it then should not be the emergency services job to sort the situation out. Also people who don't wear them should not be so selfish. Setbelts are there for a reason. |

I believe seat belts should be compulsory and you should be fined if caught not wearing one.
Head injuries and spinal injuries etc cost us the taxpayers millions probably billions and every preventative method should be taken to avoid these.
If you are not going to wear one just to claim your constitutional right then you better be prepared to fund all your bloody health expenses if you get into an accident. |

Some people are so filled with deep-seated hatred and negativity that they're compelled to share it publicly. |

| Hi there, this issue of seat belts has already been taken out of the drivers hands in the UK. I passed my test some years ago and when the seat belts became mandatory I took the view that it was silly not to belt up. In all my years of driving I have only had one accident on a dark, wet rural road.when a car came out of a unclassified road. Despite the crash we all walked away from the accident. Looking back it I can see the benefit of belting up. My only injury was the ignition key cut my leg. |
