Whether manualy or just leaving it on without use my comuter will not go into standby mode anymore. The blue screen will come up saying "preparing to standby" but stays there without going into the mode no matter how long it's on for.

Is there any way I can correct this problem without having my system completly overhauled?

Have you disabled Wake-on-LAN? This usually prevents a computer from shutting down when it is connected to a network.

Check with your PC's vendor and see whether they have an update to correct this issue.

Do you have an optical mouse that turns on just before your computer attempts to go to sleep? Sometimes the flashing power LED from the PC may set off the mouse. Try putting the mouse in an opaque cup.

Finally, you can try booting up your computer in safe mode and see if you experience the same problem. If not then there is an installed run program or service that is preventing the computer from going into sleep mode and you will probably need to retrace all updates made to your computer to identify the change that caused the problem.
