What would the world be like if everybody was a true hermaphrodite (with complete female and male sex organs) and able to both become pregnant and to impregnate another? |

Most natural occurring hermaphrodites are sequential hermaphrodites. They assume the role of one sex at a time. Also, hermaphroditism is one of nature's way of keeping population under control. If the population is too dense in a region then people in that region would transition to the same gender to prevent further child bearing.
One possible nice prospect of having human hermaphrodites is that we may achieve becoming pomosexuals and put an end to sexual barriers. |

That would present an interesting situation. I would either have to get used to it or have it removed. However, if everybody was like that, it really wouldn't make a lot of difference. |

Mac you will be pleased to know that your question is about to be answered.
In reality hermaphrodites tend to be sterile in one dept so that they cannot fertilise themselves, but Scientists have long been fascinated by this phenomena and I am involved in an area where we are applying to UK Parliament to grant us a licence to conduct experimental trials of enabling hermaphrodites of self-fertilisation.
We believe this is essential if we are to colonise other planets.
Another research group are approaching Parliament to get a licence to allow animal-human fertilisation. We do not intend to produce viable beings [at this stage] it is purely for research purposes and any animal-human hybrid produced would be our property and contained within our laboratories so there would be no risk of escape.
But can you imagine the potential in the future: A human-animal hybrid which has no rights but is the sole property of its owner to do with whatever they wish. Imagine a horse that you could tell to go to a given destination and it could work out your map references for you. Or a guard dog which only attacks burglars and is able to discriminate between the postman, policeman and a genuine burglar.
Imagine soldiers in the field who are beastly creatures with human intelligence. They are not human so do not have human rights. They can be trained in combat and expected to rip the heart out of the enemy and at the end of the day when they have killed as many of your enemies to neutralise a threat, you simply take out your own gun and put a slug in the base of their skull.
Far better animal -human hybrids are fighting our wars than our own boys. |

In general, true humans hermaphrodites do not exist. Those with ambiguous gender are known as Intersex. True hermaphroditism is so rare it is considered impossible. However, there here have some notable occurrences that appear in the news from time to time.
I recall reading an early report of tetragametic chimerism, where an male and female zygotes fuse together and become a mosaic of male and female cells and organs. More recently, there was a report of mosaicism, where an egg is fertilized by two sperms.
