I've recently got the free laptop and router thro the carphone warehouse and have been trying to download torrents but it is extremely slow and sometimes it just stops and the rate drops to 0kbps.
Can anyone suggest how i can speed up the downloads?? |

I'm running into problems viewing torrents... It seems you need special new softwares to do anything with the stuff...
If your computer is stopping downloads.. you might check the "My Computer" and C, to see how much memory is remaining... Maybe it cuts out because the hd is close to out of memory..?
If that's the case, then you need to run various cleaners to dump the garbage it's got stored on the hd...
Cacheman Memory Restore...
Free Window Registry Repair...
CCleaner...
EasyCleaner...
Run: DiskCleanUp, ScanDisk thorough, and Defrag...
Clear the browser's cache...
Very Important!.. Make sure the router's data wires are not being crossed by AC power cords... which just might be the reason for your problems... Crossed cords can drop your reception a lot...
It sounds like maybe your Internet input is weak... That is commonly caused by wires crossing data wires, and/or by corroded cable connectors... Check all your cable connectors, from the computer to as close to the pole as you can... If you see even the slightest bit of green or white corrosion, that connector is garbage.. replace both ends... If it's a corroded splitter, trash it, and replace it, plus the cable end... You cannot have any splitters or non-sealed connectors outside.. they will corrode in a couple months, causing this type of trouble... If you have any make-shift cable connections, such as spliced wires, that will definitely cause that problem, and will mess up the cable reception for others in your neighborhood if there are community connector boxes feeding the neighborhood's cable TV and Internet... Cable connections Must be made with shielded connectors and shielded cables, and must be done properly... |

Assuming you're downloading one of the very few legitimate torrents like "rebirth" then...
* Go from wireless to a wired connection, this will fix any connection stability issues that can come up when you use wireless
* Make sure you have the latest version of the p2p software you're using. I've used Azureus which works very well.
* In the p2p software check that a complete version of the file is available - it's not always the case. This often happens if you're downloading something illegally, in which case you deserve to get a nasty virus as well as getting bóllocked for piracy. |

you may need to forward your ports
ISP's often block commonly used ports that people use for torrents to save on bandwith
also one thing to consider is that you were downloading a torrent and you got to a point where there was no more seeds left in the swarm which had the piece of data you were after, if that happens your download will grind to a halt until a peer or seeder who does have the part you are missing comes back and starts seeding again.
if your torrent ever stops at 99.8 or 99.9 and there appears to be lots of other people stuck at that amount then be aware that you have probably fallen into a MPAA trap or other anti piracy group trying to bait torrent so they can sue them or whatever
or if the description of the torrent has hundred's/thousands of seeds and when you start download there is no one seeding then it is also probably a trap. i fell into one of those once and had an anti piracy organisation trying to get into my comp for about 1 day. good job i had the peerguardian firewall protecting me |

!. Install Bit Torrent version 6.0.1
2. Utilize Piratebay.org to locate torrents
3. Check/Set Bit Torrent >Preferences>Connection>Randomize port each time Bit Torrent starts |

That would be even more illegal than downloading copyrighted material. I think it's more likely to have been a private individual who's tacked on a Rootkit program to allow them to spy on your computer. |

| Also, you need to look for torrents that have seeders and leechers. If there are none: dead torrent. If there are alot: good torrent. |

More and more it's sounding like "torrents" is just an easy way for government Intel and big business snoops to plant root-kits in key people's computers... I'm thinkin' the only way I'll do any torrents, is with a removable hard drive to be used exclusively for playing around with torrents, and suspect webpages, with just the basic operating system and the necessary torrent softwares, all burned onto a CD, so whenever the hd gets hit by a virus or torrent-bug, all I need do is format-C, and drop-in the custom OS CD... This way my main hd never gets bugged and wrecked...
I've gone four-months without an AVS and Firewall... I'm trying for five... You are your best security... AVS's and Firewalls don't stop serious bugs, they only stress and load the system... I run TinyPersonalFirewall (from olderversions) working in the back, to stop internals from connecting..
I set TPF to block everything, but DNS, SeaMonkey, and OutGoingPing... It has worked for four months... Nothing gets out, and nothing has gotten in, yet... but TPF isn't so much a firewall, as it's more like a little "splash-guard"... |

wow! a WHOLE 4 months cosmic. My machine is coming up for 3 years in the summer and it's still setup exactly as it was the day I built it and is still virus / junk / spyware free.
I forgot the carphone warehouse bit - yeah, they're basically doing something called "traffic shaping" which is set up to deliberately reduce the amount of traffic from certain applications (like p2p applications such as 4OD, iPlayer, Bittorrent, gnutella/limewire, emule, napster etc). The more expensive ISP's do less (or less harsh) shaping and so you'll get a better slice of the pie when it comes to torrents / p2p. |

4-months is a record... 3-years would be impossible with this PC, and this IP, given that I am in process of convincing religion and democracy and that they are the whole cause of most of the crime and the insanity in humanity... Asshole religious folk are in perpetual process of attacking my computer, in their desperate last ditch efforts to try to silence me from spreading the truth, and destroying their insanities... Seems I'm finally getting through to the mindless masses, who have been conned all their lives, who know and live nothing but the con...
But there aren't any torrents in this, yet... When it is a torrent, it will make even your lovely heaven and hell blush, and look to its feet in search of reality...
3-years a bug-free PC is possible only if you have done absolutely nothing in that three years to help alleviate the problems that plague humanity...
Should you anger the groups of hateful vile warring insane mindless Christians, 3-years is not possible... You would be lucky to get two months without needing to format C...
In 3-years of your mostly only playing interactive cartoons on your PC you could easily maintain a hack-free PC.. but I do very much doubt you have run the same OS-load for three straight years... You only say that to stoke the coals in your submissive effort to remain silent, stagnant, and at peace, within your precious Christian wars...
I still believe that torrents are merely a means to get into computers that all other ways have failed... In that, I would dare not download and open a Christian torrent, for it would be sure thing that I would be formatting C that evening, or the next morrow... |

Cosmic, you're don quixote tilting at windmills, I like your determination even if you're clearly not quite all there.
3 years is easily achievable (my machine has been up since 16th May 2005) even in the face of relatively hardcore hackers (as my IDS logs will attest) never mind some picayune religious wannabe hackers. Only thing that ever really took me down was a DDoS that flooded my connection, more a partially successful attack against my ISP, my machine was never comprimised in that time.
If you believe that you're being targeted, you're being paranoid. If you were *actually* being genuinely attacked you'd be gone by now. I'm not talking about a bit of spyware - the first you'd ever know is when some figures of authority arrived to take you away.
Oh, and I'm an antithiest - I happen to consider religion itself conceptually wrong.

OMG......
you all are going to the WRONG SITES.....those ones are run by cops to find out who is downloading so they can put you into jail......NEVER download from a open torrent site...all ways use a privte site and even some of the privt sites are no good...they are all so run by cops.....best to i can tell you will be
ilovetorrents.org and wild-bytes.org those are good and safe
items you MUST HAVE
Winrar
PeerBlocker *keeps cops from finding you...blocks out there ip rage and helps you get faster speeds but not leting "trash" connect up to you*
utorrent is the best one i say...works very well.
and after downloading all ways do a virse scan on it...and DONT OPEN IT THAT SAME DAY wait a few days sometimes a virse scan cant pick up a virse in it until a few days when the code comes 2getter when it will work...*a timer on the bug* and another thing when u upzip it scan it again as the bug could of been "cut" into pices and would not of been found...so when it is unziped the bug is all there and can do alot of bad things....so scan scan scan and wait a few days be4 you open the file it self.
if anyone else needs to know more info....get a hold of me...i am a uploader...*was* i have over 3.5tb under my belt *upload* and 1.4tb download ... |
