I am 30 years old and I live at home with my mom and always have. In the last year she has been driving me crazy with questions about what I am doing and when I will be home. I am very responsible, I basically go out with friends to clubs or restaurants. I don't drink or do any drugs and she knows that. I know that she depends on me a lot for friendship and companionship. But I really can't stand the pressure anymore and it is making us grow apart. I am hoping to move out soon, within the year, but I need to prepare financially. My question is, how do I talk to her about this. She is going to freak out.

mom, we need to talk. as you know, i love you, but i'm also 30 years old and it's about 10 years past due for me to leave the nest. i'm really grateful that i've been able to stay here all these years as it would have been difficult for me to make it on my own but, it really is time. i've saved up enough money to do this and i've found a place i like that i can afford. mom, i'm an adult. i need to live on my own. i promise i'll visit.

i think any mother would understand.

i was 33 when my 12 year-long relationship imploded. i had a breakdown, was hospitalized, was broke, and moved BACK in with mom for almost four years until i could get it back together. it was not a stellar time in my life; i had been out of my parents house since i was 18. now, long again on my own, i am well, happy, and in love. it's a funny life. get going. your mom has made it this far just fine. she wants you to succeed, right?
