Keely Hawes

Just noticed that thelovely actress Keely Hawes who clearly has pierced ears in the new series Ashes to Ashes and in the new Boots adverts on the television has had her pierced holes airbrushed out of the magazine adverts for Boots. Why would they do that - just let her wear some very discreet little studs.
I do remember years ago that the models on the front cover of Woman and Womans Own magazines never wore earrings for the photo, but you see they did have. This would be the late 60's early 70's when not many women did have their ears pierced.

ear piercing before the gun was invented

Postby uri on Mon Feb 11, 2008 11:45 am

I'd love to be a woman back then, and experience all the fun!

I developed an ear piercing fetish as a child, ever since I was told such a thing exist. In my family (early 70's) there were no women with pierced ears - no girls, and my mom and aunt didn't have. then my other aunt pierced her ears - she was 22. I was 6, and when I asked how they do it she answered "with a needle".

I was both scared and thrilled at the same time.

when I was 16 I first acted upon my fantasy and pierced my ears. By then (1981) ear piercing started to be ok for boys (left ear only). but I was too shy or something to go for it. I just did it myself - took a pin, not even a safety pin, "sterilized" it in a flame, and just forced it through (not so easy as it sounds). When it went through I bended it to form sort of an "earring", and after some practice, bleeding etc. I had three pins through each ear. I went to sleep that way and pulled it out in the mornings. after I "practiced" more for a few days - forced a paper clip through the hole and lost my way inside the lobe, for example - I gave that up.

Two years later I first had my left ear pierced with a gun. funny I was shivering and my girlfriend held my hand. didn't hurt this time, no fun...

Uri,

You are not alone. Like you, I developed a fetish about pierced ears when I was a young boy in the 1940s. None of the women in my family or the small village where we lived had pierced ears, but when I went to the nearby town where my mother did her shopping I would see older women, mostly immigrants from Eastern Europe, who had their ears pierced. I was completely fascinated by the fact that the earrings went right through their ears.

Fast forward to the late 1950s when I was a teen ager. Pierced ears were still very unusal in our area, but "look pierced" earrings that screwed on but made the peron's ears look like they were pierced became popular, particularly among teen aged girls. I bought a pair for myself and enjoyed wearing them in the privacy of my bedroom.

Fast forward again to the 1960s when I was dating the woman who became my wife. Pierced ears were becoming popular in our area and I asked her to have her ears pierced which she did. She knew how fascinated I was with earrings and jokingly suggested that since she would now be wearing earrings for pierced ears she would give me all of her earrings for unpierced ears. I took her upon this and often wore earrings when we were together.

Shortly after we were married my wife convinced me that since I was so fascinated with pierced ears and earrings that I should have my ears pierced. I took a week of vacation from work and she pierced them for me with a needle and an ice cube. That was a great thrill for me. Back then men with pierced ears were virtually unknown, so I wore earrings only in the privacy of our home. When I went out I used makeup to hide the holes in my lobes. Today men with pierced ears are common enough that I wear earrings virtually all the time and no one thinks anything about it.

ear piercing before the gun

Your wife persuaded you to have your ears pierced? back in the 60's? incredible! You're some lucky guy! You must have a very special relationship. Did she like it?

You must be round 70 YO now, right? what earrings you used to were back then? Do you were earrings now? Did you start to were them in public? if yes, when? Where you were living (what country)? Did you like or dislike the pain?

(sorry for that barrage of questions, you don't have to answer any unless you feel like it, of course)

My girlfriend also persuaded me, but it was in 83 and earrings on men were pretty common. she thought it would relax my obsession maybe. It didn't. I kept piercing myself, then pulling the earrings out - I was a soldier and couldn't keep them in. so I let them close and did it again. I was looking for a place to do it with a needle, and only one did, and it was too expensive for me.

Later I used to have my ears pierced at the Jewelr's, pull the studs out and reused them for piercing my ears again, simply with my thumb. I once did two holes, one in the middle of each lobe, which I use till that day. But I also used other stuff. once I read about the bedouines using thorns to pierce ears, and next thing I did is find a sutable thorny bush (It's Jerusalem, thorns in the summer are like coals in Newcastle), get a smooth one and force it through.

Uri,

My wife did not persuade me to have my ears pierced as much as she convinced me to fulfill my own desire to have my ears pierced. So long as I wore screw on earrings there was no evidence when I was not wearing them, but once my ears were pierced I would always have those little holes in my lobes for all the world to see. My wife explained to me how I could hide the holes with makeup. I won't go into intimate details, but my wife liked playing with my screw on earrings and knew we would both enjoy her playing with earrings in my pierced ears even more, just as I enjoyed playing with her earrings. Yes, we had and still do have a very special relationship.

Ever since I started wearing screw on earrings in my teens I have always worn whatever earrings I liked and what was fashionable at the time. As pierced ears became more common, earrings for pierced ears became more common until by the late 1960s the only earrings available for ears that were not pierced were styles for older women, more in my mother's age range than mine. Back then the popular styles of earrings for pierced ears were small studs similar to the studs available today and dangles on what came to be called 'kidney' wires because their shape resembled the outline of a kidney. The dangles were attached to a small bend in the wires. To wear them you put the plain end of the wire through your ear, then fastened it behind a sharp bend in the other end of the wire so it would not come out of your ear. As hoop earrings became popular I added those to my collection also.

When my ears were first pierced I wore earrings only at home. Until my ears heled enough that I could go for a day or two without concern about the holes closing, whenever I went away from home I wore plastic studs that my wife fashioned from round plastic toothpicks. These did not have any fronts or backs, so they fit entirely inside my ears and were not at all visible, particularly when covered with makeup. The first time I wore earings in public was about 1973, give or take a year, while we were on vacation and I was certain I would not see anyone I knew other than my wife. We were at Provincetown, MA which is located at the tip end of Cape Cod. Provincetown is a mecca for gays, lesbians and cross dressers, so a man wearing small earrings did not attract any particular attention. As more and more men began wearing earrings I wore my earrings more and more until now I wear earrings almost all the time. What I wear on any particular day depends on where I am going, what I will be doing and what I happen to feel like wearing that day.

I will be 70 in May. We have always lived in the northeastern part of the United States, generally known as New England.

You asked if I liked or disliked the pain. I am not sure what pain you are asking about. I do not remember any pain when my wife pierced my ears, probably because I was so excited about having my ears pierced. We took proper care of my ears until they healed, so they have never closed up and I never had to have them pierced again. My ears have now been pierced long enough that my holes will remain open for the rest of my life, even if I never wore earrings again. There is certainly no pain associated with wearing earrings in pierced ears. They are so comfortable you can easily forget you are wearing them, particularly the light weight studs.

ear piercing before the gun

GP, thanks you for your detailed answer. It was so interesting - I'm so thrilled to hear about guys my parent's age (well I guess I'm some other people's parents age), who were attracted by earrings the way I was, overcoming Gender barriers, and still keep it up!

GP, I have a parallel experience. Having worked as an executive in 'corporate world' until retiring early, I then decided on a serious change of image, had both ears pierced and let my hair grow. A few years later I now wear an 8g gold CBR in each ear (all the time). Shoulder-length hair tends to cover the earrings a little but they are mostly visible. I think one should not be timid about one's dress or jewelry - if you wear earrings, then people should take it or leave it. Nobody has commented adversely or otherwise about my earrings, but slightly to my surprise I've had positive comments about the hair, which is lowlighted (covers grey and looks cool), two of them from complete strangers (women).
The ear piercing (at Claires) didn't hurt, but the stretching (in 3 stages) was uncomfortable and itched for a few days after.

When i was 10 years old i got my ears pierced by my mother with a needle and a potato. Showing the needle through my ear hurt a little bit. It mostly hurt when the needle was pulling out and a stud was pushed through the new hole. I was proud of my new earrings and i wore my hair to a ponytail, so everyone saw my new ears. In the age of 15 i got a second stud in my right ear with a piercing gun at the jeweller. It doesn't hurt, i heard only a plopp, the ear itched for a hour. When i was 17 i got a stud in my right nose, pierced with the same gun where you get ears pierced. When i was 19 i come together with my boyfriend. I like pierced ear or ears on men and for the first two years i try to persuade him to get his ear pierced. On day he was drunken and he agreed. I push a stud of mine through his ear, few days later his ear went raw, so he put his earring out. i thought this willbe the end of his earpiercing adventure. Days before my 24 Birthday i was shopping with my boyfriend in town, we past a juweller who advertising ear piercing. My Boyfriend said to me: you might get a additional stud in you right ear, it will be look hot. I was scared, but i don't know why. I said to him: When you will get your ear done too. He reflected and said yes. We went in chose a pair of studs, I got my third hole on my right ear and my boyfriend his first hole on his left ear pierced with a piercing gun. Today i wear sometimes small hoops or studs i the second an third hole. I never wear my nosestud, but in my first holes i always wear earrings, hoops, dangels or studs, and it is exiting to change the rings in my really pierced holes.

Ear piercing before the gun

Needle and potato 14 yrs ago? Wow!! where do you live? I'm thrilled.

So now you're going to pierce a second hole in you left ear, or a fourth one in your right, so your boyfriend would pierce a first one in his right ear and have an earring in both ears.

BTW, what do you boyfriend wear in his ear? what would you like him to?

Thanks for the flowers. I got pierced in the end of the eightys, the gun was invented. Our local jeweller shot askew and uneven holes and the new ears often become raw. When i was aking for earrings my mother, knowing this facts, pierced my ears by needle and cut potato, exatly the same procedure she got pierced. My holes healed very well, and they are even and straight.

I'm happy with the number of holes i got, years ago i contemplate abot another holes, but i think three holes in one ear is enough. I often wear earrings in my first holes, and let my second and third hole without jewellery
I like the look of naked earholes if they not become stretched.

My Boyfriend don't wear an earring any more, sometimes i put a stud of mine threw his ear to keep the hole open.

ear piercing

Is it OK for a 40+ woman to have two pierced holes in her ear? I had my ears pierced when I was 12 and have always been very conventional. My husband keeps nagging me to get another piercing just behind the hole in my left ear and has bought a tiny gold stud that he wants me to wear. I'm not sure.. :?

It is OK for a woman to have two holes at any age, but only if she wants to.
Are you unsure because of your age, or unsure it is what you want? Why does your husband want you to have your ear pierced again and why only one ear? Does he have pierced ear(s)? If he doesn't, would you have him get one if you do?
Many questions, not necessarily for answering here!

You've had 40 years to be conventional so it could be time for you to make a change - if you want to. If you do, I think I would go with a second hole in both ears, gives you a lot of possibilities including wearing the single gold stud your husband bought you. How about he buys you some diamond studs, "a girls best friend"!

Best Wishes whatever you decide.

Thanks for this. My husband wouldn't wear earrings and I wouldn't want him to either - it wouldn't suit him. I'm just not sure whether it's very fashionable to have these days. I suppose I'm not worried about my age. Do people still get second piercings though? None of my girlfriends ever wear more than one earring in each ear now although I know that some used to.

I could get both ears pierced again but that seems more dramatic than one! The stud that he has bought is really very tiny - about 2.5mm. I don't think that I've ever seen anyone else wearing studs like this. Does anyone have any opinions?

I am in my 50's and I wear four studs in each ear and I think they look very smart so go for it.

Thanks for this. It seems that for some people it's not a big thing but for me it is. Four in each ear sounds like a lot of taking in and out! Or do you just leave them in. What made you want so many? Should I be getting excited about piercing?

What's the best method for piercing? My husband also got a home piercing kit with silver plated studs. Are these safe to use? Should I let him do it?
