Hi everyone,

I’m new here and my first questions are about high heels…

Why is it that most high heels you can get on the high street come with slippery plastic soles, even the ones with little groves on seem to have the same shiny coating that makes the slippery on smooth floors?

Has anybody else on this forum ever slipped over because they were wearing high heels?

I’ve worn mine on one or two icy days recently and found that I kept slipping. I see a lot of us girls that do that, wear high-heeled shoes even when the pavements are snowy and icy…anybody else on here who’s always brave enough to put looking fashionable above wearing good grippy shoes for walking in snowy weather?

Anybody got any experiences they would like to share?

Thanks,
Louise.

Outside you I think if just have to be carefull.

If I am indoors on a slippery floor, as you describe, I usully just slip off my heels and carry them!! I think it is safer than taking a risk!! I also, often take my heels off when going up or down stairs, for the same reason.

Have you tried this?

You certainly do have to be careful outside!! Icy pavements and high heels definitely do not mix!! I do carry my heels when I walking on steep stairs but I can't really walk around outside with just my stockings/tights on!!

I'm just curious really about why for some women fashion is always more important than practicality. What it is that makes some of us venture out on days when the pavements are snowy (and practical flat shoes are so obviously the surest option) wearing shoes with stiletto heels and little, slippery soles?

I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board who's gone to work in high heels as normal when nice grippy flats would be much more suitable to the weather conditions risking a fall and an injured ankle. Anybody else ever gone out (to work, clubbing or whatever) in sexy shoes and found themself slipping and sliding??

Thanks,
Louise.

I agree it is difficult outside, as I say I think you just need to be careful. I have often gone to work in heels in poor weather, and found myself regretting it!!

What do you do on stairs, - do you just take your shoes off and carry them like me? Do you do it a lot on all stairs or just steep ones?

Also, just out of interest do you find it uncomfortable wearing heels all day in a work / office enviroment, - or do you remove or change them?

I've twisted my ankle twice from wearing stupid high heeled boots when it was icy out.All I wear now is flats but I do miss looking nice and sexy in high heeled boots at work, there was a girl at work who slipped and fell b/cos of the wet floors and her slippery shoes, she did try and sue,but the judge threw her claim out saying it was her fault basically.I dunno if that is true,it sounds like an urban legend to me.

I work as a secretry and wear heels to work, however, as soon as I arrive in the office I slip off my shoes and just go in my stockig feet all day. I spend a lot of my time rushing around the office and going up and down stairs, which I think would be lethal in high heels!! I just feel much safer and more comfy in my stockings feet. If I go out of the office I put my shoes back on, but otherwise they stay off until I go home.

Hi, thanks for the replies,

TBH while my sig says I love really high heels and I do, I struggle to keep them on all day sometimes!!

I work in an office so I can usually get away with slipping my heels off under my desk if my feet get uncomfy. I can get away with wearing heels up to about 2.5/3inches and just slipping them off when my feet get sore but I don't think I could pad around in my stockings for very long, my bosses wouldn't like it very much. Actually I quite like "playing" with my shoes, hosiery makes my feet "slippery" so I can slip my high heels off easily, does anyone else do this, or like the sensations, cooled feet, slippery tights etc?

I sometimes see women walking around in heels of 4 inches and more that they obviously wear to work, I don't know how they manage it. Does anyone on here regularly wear heels that high? (all day?) What coping strategies do you have to deal with the discomfort??

Taking heels off when walking up and down stairs is useful guard against slipping and falling, so I do that, but you're right, outside when its slippy I'll just have to take care...unless anyone knows any surefire ways of making high heels, with their small soles a bit more grippy, (btw I hate those sure-tread pads, I think they look ugly plastered to the soles of your shoes!!)

Has anyone else had any experiences of slipping/falling while wearing high heels?

Thanks,
Louise.

Cheers
Louise.

Hi Louise,

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what makes you think you could'nt get away with going in your stockings feet in the office. I love wearing heels, but around the office it is so much easier and more comfy to just leave them off and go in stockings feet. Maybe I am just lucky in where I work, but I have'nt had any compaints, - why don't you try it? If you can't do this have you thought about keeping a pair of comfy shoes in the office or slippers to change into?

I like slipping my heels off as well, for example at friends houses, resturants, etc, - do you ever do this?

Hope to hear from you again soon.

Hi Louise,

Ive been wearing stilletto heels of between 4-5" for about 15yrs now but only lately have i worn them all day ie at work.

I think shoe sizes will affect how comfortable your foot is in that variable height of heel. I am a size 7 and am very comfy in a 3.5" heel but prefer the look of a 4" heel which i can wear all day! I couldn't go about the office without my heels so found it good to wear my 4" courts to go to work in and then i change into a pair of 4" mules for the office which i find very comfy and yet still looking sexy... gotta keep up the image 24/7

Roll on summer when i can go to work wearing mules... my favorite, and i'm getting quite a nice selection of mules for all occassions.. up to 5.5" heels, but i only wear them for v special occassions!!!

I work in an open plan office with lots of other people, and the atmosphere is pretty professional, also I have to deal with visitors/members of the public quite regularly and I don’t think my manager would approve of me walking around in just my stockings.

Also the floor immediately outside our office is hard, shiny and v. cold, I don’t much fancy walking on that for long without my shoes on, its cold and probably even slippier with just my stockings on than wearing my shoes. I’ve sometimes got some comfy shoes under my desk but not always. Sometimes I walk to work in my heels, it’s a long way so I suppose I should stop that, keep the heels at the office and wear comfy flats to walk about in but I like wearing them when I’m out after work and then I end up walking in wearing them the next morning.

The discomfort of my 2.5/3 ins heels I can deal with fairly easily, one point of the thread was my admiration for the women who strut around seemingly effortlessly and gracefully in higher heels, that I can wear but that make my feet hurt quite quickly so I don’t wear them often, certainly not all day, everyday. I don’t know how you do it!!

I also wanted some opinions on our mindset when it comes to wearing heels, esp. from those who do it all the time. The mindset that keeps us teetering around in pointy shoes in the middle of winter when you might risk a slip or a fall on a greasy or icy pavement (heaven knows I’ve seen enough girls doing it, struggling along slippery paths wearing shoes that are so impractical, slithering and sliding and I’ve done it myself too!) But why? What makes us do things like that, and what must the men think of us tottering around, or do you not care?

Thanks,

Louise.

It is difficult walking on icy surfaces, and all you can do is try being careful. I have to walk down a steep hill to get to the bus stop on the way to work. I usually wear heels and when it is frosty or icy it is difficult. Most of the time I manage to get down the hill, but a couple of times when it hgas been very slippery, I have taken my heels off and carried them, while I walk down the hill. I really would,nt recommend this as my feet got very cold, but it was safer than walking down the heel in leather soled high heels.

Do you ever wear high heeled boots, - I do in the winter but find them uncomfortable to wear all day. I am afraid I tend to view them as out doors wear, and in the same way that I remove my coat and gloves when I arrive in the office, I also remove my boots and go shoeless!!

Hi

I’m not a high-heeled boots fan I have to say, I find most too tight to be comfy and I much prefer shoes from a comfort and a looks point of view. Are leather soles even more slippery than plastic ones?? I can’t say because I haven’t got any heels that have leather soles, but I find the plastic ones can be very slippery on some surfaces. What do other people think, which gives less grip, synthetic or leather??

Thanks.

I normally wear pointy-toed stilettos for work, usually around 4ins and sometimes a little more. I don't take them off in the office as I think this would be too casual.

I don't have a 'coping strategy', I wear heels pretty much every day so to be honest if my feet are hurting me I'm so used to it now that I hardly notice.

As for slipping, leather soles are a lot better than plastic and I just take care to avoid surfaces that I know could give me problems.

Hi,

Much respect to you if you can wear 4 inches and higher heels all day!! I know I can't do that, yet! I'll have to put in some more practice wearing some of my higher shoes for longer.

Thanks.

Hi,

Have you been wearing heels all day, or were you able to slip them off and give your feet a rest around the office? By the way, do you live in the UK?
