Hair color

Hi, I recently posted ina forum about this but since I am not registered and could not find the topic which I posted the question, I am asking it again.

You see, I read that there was a highlighter that can lighten the hair - well, we all know that is what highlighters do, however, what I heard of did not dye the hair color so much as it helped to lighten it. So instead of using a hair dye to color my hair it seems more like a lightening process. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a product that can do this? Hair dye is completely different, and it won't make my hair lighter unless I go to a salon but I don't have the money for that.
