Too many times I have run into similar troubles with software installs, which seeming to out of the blue lose parts of their components.. and discovered that totally uninstalling them, plus deleting them from find and registry, is the only method to re-establish a clean base, which a new install with take properly... And when it comes to Linux, I expect that a clean viable base is crucial...

This is crucial when updating from an older version... Too often obsolete configs will linger and disrupt operations of the newer install...

Never be the first to try new operating systems!

Just prior to Vista's release, there were reviewers everywhere telling people not to bother until they bring out service pack one, which will, no doubt, be at least six months ago.
Although Microsoft kept promising Vistas release for many years, and the fact it was in BETA test versions for the past two years, Microsoft outsourced some of the programming to other companies. One of the main companies never got to finish some vital work they were doing and had to rush it because Microsoft told them they wanted to release the product earlier than that other company realised.

Another big issue with Vista is security compatibility. Apparently there are loads of new super-secure features in Vista, but most of them are incompatible with the security measures of other companies. Allegedly most customers will find it impossible to access things such as _ banking, because the security programs used by banks are just not compatible yet.

On the plus side, because Vista is so secure, you're probably more safe on the net, but you'll, no doubt, keep running into problems for a long while yet.
