I can only speak from my own first car experience as a new driver and my suggestion would be to buy an Army tank.

A used Toyota would be good. There tough and even if they are crashed, they retain a good value if you need to settle with an insurance co.

I sort of quit driving. I have autos in my garage and I'll drive them but, I prefer to be driven. You can use you imagination on my driving. I've probably crashed about 10 vehicles. Well, 10 that I was driving. That doesn't include the other cars that either got in my way or I didn't happen to see. One time, in my earlier driving days, I crashed into a car from the rear, it went into the car in front of him, the car in front of him crashed into the car in front of him. OMG. Thankfully no one was hurt. When the policeman asked me what happened, I told him the truth, I was looking at the dress in the store window and didn't notice that all the cars in front of me was at a dead stop. He kindly told me that he would forget what I had told him and for me to not repeat it to the next policeman. Oh, I could be writing for days about all the different crashes. I think I haven't had one in the last five years though.

 I really think you should start a thread about this in member's chit chat - 'name your best car accidents'! I think it's best if you remain a passenger :D

Toyota Yaris or Aygo.

Nissan Micra much as I hate to say so.

Other options Corsa, Small fiat of peugeot.

Probably the biggest concern should be insurance cost as that often is as much as the car cost for new drivers.

Have you tried SEAT? they're good on insurance and get quite afew mod cons. most of the parts are made by VW so very reliable and high quality, perhaps a ibiza would be a good choice?
