He's 11 now (just about to go to secondary school) and was 9 when he had his ears pierced.

However, to put another view, my nephews were only 2 and 4 when my brother had their ears pierced - obviously at that age it was my brother and his wife's decision rather that the boys' - but they've never had any problems either.

Thanks for replying Mark.

It would seem my fears about it being too young are unfounded, even for my 7 year old.

So are you going to get Matthew and Andrew's ears pierced Colonel?
How many would he or they get, one or both?
What studs will you have as the inital ones, such as gold or sivler?

The only question I can really answer there is the second - one ear only.

I did ask my wife again last night about taking Matthew and Andrew, and she said she wasn't sure about it but that it was "up to me". Meaning that I'll get the blame from her parents and mine!

When I get home in a bit I will ask the both of them and see what they say.

Hope the chat goes OK. If they do want it piercing, you'll have chosen a really good time if, like mine, your kids are virtually at the start of the long summer holiday. If you take them reasonably quickly, they should get most of the healing done before they go back to school so no messing about with bits of tape to cover them up for PE, etc.

Surprisingly my wife had already asked them before I got home, even though she was the one who previously said we shouldn’t ask! She got a yes from both Matthew and Andrew; although Andrew was a little scared it would hurt apparently. I’ve asked her if she is really alright with it, and she said the kids were happy about it, so she’d let them get it.

Mark, you raise a good point, it will need to be done quickly before going back to school, although I probably won’t be able to take them any sooner than Thursday this week.

Need to get to bed; I’ve so much work to do it is a nightmare.

Although I remember someone, think it was an earring shop employee, who said if there
were two kids to be done, always do the younger one first. She didn't explain the reason,
but my take on it is this: If the younger one doesn't cry, then the older one doesn't dare
cry for fear of being babyish. And if the younger one does cry that's OK because it is
the younger one, and the older one won't cry to show how much more grown up he/she
is.

Colonel,

don't forget to take a movie of it !
And by the way, you should also have 1 ear done as a family bonding experience.

I don't know what it would be best to do about that. I think it is best to ask the person doing it to say what they find works better.

A movie? I never took a movie of when my two eldest did. Why would you want to do that?

I won't be getting any either!

Hope everything goes well on Thursday. As I've said previously, I think you did the right thing to ask them and the summer holidays is a really good time to get them done.

Thanks Mark, they are happy about it at least. That is the most important thing.

Are your boys allowed to wear earrings at school Colonel?
Have they said what studs they might like to get?
where are you going to get them done?

Yes, my boys are allowed to wear earrings at their schools.

Have they said what studs they might like to get?

Not to me. It will be something fairly standard. When my eldest got his done he got a gold one, and my second son (who had two done at different times) got diamond ones on both ocassions.

where are you going to get them done?

It's a store called "Claires", that is where my other boys had it done and it was recommended to me by one of my staff when my eldest wanted his done. So far I have been impressed with them.

All I can say is be careful with Claires... they are not professionally trained, and if getting both done, often misalign them
I always went to professionals until I started doing my own and friends (with correct equipment and training)
Also, if they ever want cartilage done in the future, use a needle not a gun

Don't worry snappy, my two eldest boys had theirs done at Claires and were fine. It doesn't really require much skill to do, and I do look out for hygiene (such as wearing gloves etc) and so far they have been fine.

My boys will only be getting one so alignment wouldn't be a problem. I am also aware that stud guns are only for use on earlobes (my wife is a GP so she knows, and in fact deals with, things that go wrong).

Thanks snappy.
