Director Menno Meyjes (Academy Award Nominated screenwriter, The Colour Purple) builds his speculative story about an unlikely friendship between a fictional German Jewish art dealer called Max Rothman (Cusack) and Adolf Hitler (Taylor), both are soldiers coming to terms with life in the aftermath of the First World War.
