The UK fashion industry has been criticised by the House of Lords for encouraging a 'throwaway society'.
The House of Lords Science Committee spoke out yesterday about the damaging trend for 'fast fashion' and the effect it is having on the growing amount of domestic waste in Britain.
Lords accused retailers of encouraging "consumers to dispose of clothes which have only been worn a few times in favour of new, cheap garments which themselves will also go out of fashion and be discarded within a matter of months"
The peers suggested that VAT be cut on more eco-friendly clothes and tax reduced on the cost of repairing damaged clothes in order to combat this growing problem.
What do you think? Should we think more carefully about what clothes we buy? Or is it all about freedom of choice?
