The first of two episodes focuses on Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), and their treatment at the hands of their captors.
The Others have previously been portrayed as dirty, barefooted, heavily-armed hillbillies, but hints along the way indicate that their villainous ways are not what they seem.
Are they, as Henry Gale (Michael Emerson) claimed, the good guys? What have they really got in store for their prisoners?
Separated from each other, the captives respond in ways fans have come to expect.
Jack is aggressive and proactive, determined to fix the situation as quickly as he can. Sawyer is insolent.
And Kate, having gone through a bad stretch, is defeated.
Secrets are revealed, escape plans are made, but the overriding tone is one of despair.
