Despite women often being portrayed as the Bridget Jones type waiting by the phone, new research found that a shocking sixty nine per cent (69%) of women admitted to not calling a date when promising to do so. This compared to only fifty five per cent (55%) of men, showing that women are playing men at their own dating game.
The national poll of over 2,000 adults by dot mobile, the UKs only student mobile network, showed that those in Scotland are the worst behaved, with thirty six per cent (36%) admitting they had not called someone after promising to, while those in the South West and Wales demonstrated the best phone etiquette, with thirty eight per cent (38%) saying they would always call.
Only seven per cent (7%) of women would take it upon themselves to call a man after their first meeting. Lucky for them, their male counterparts are much more confident about making the first move, with thirty three per cent (33%) stating they would make the call.
The only thing which seems to even out the UK dating playing field is texting. Despite clinging to the old cliche of never call a man after a first date, almost half of women questioned (forty six per cent (46%)) believe it to be socially acceptable to text someone after their first meeting, matched by forty seven per cent (47%) of men.
Once people do get together, the phone continues to play an important role in relationships. Nineteen per cent (19%) of men and twenty per cent (20%) of
women said they spoke with their partner on the phone every day while over a quarter of those questioned (twenty seven per cent (27%)) admitting they tap away texting their loved ones at least five times a day. Despite traditionally being one of the poorest social groups, the total rises to a whopping thirty six per cent (36%) when asking students. Unsurprisingly, the under-25s are the worst offenders, with eighteen per cent (18%) admitting to sending more than 10 text messages every day to their partners.
The phone can also play a role when it comes to ending a relationship. Only nine per cent (9%) of men and thirteen per cent (13%) of women thought that ending a relationship by phone was the worst example of bad phone etiquette, choosing a phone ringing in the cinema as a much worse crime, with twice as many votes at twenty six per cent (26%).

One way to tell someone you fancy them is to send a singing telegram to their home or office. Many will be doing just that on Valentine's Day
