Britons looking for potential love matches are put off prospective partners if they have poor eco-standards, according to new results released today.
A survey of 2,046 adults across the UK, commissioned by EDF Energy, reveals that the environment now ranks alongside a good dress sense and sense of humour for 1 in 5 Britons, who say they would ditch a date if they did not embrace simple eco-habits such as recycling or re-using plastic bags.
And it seems that green issues increasingly have the potential to cause tension in existing relationships with 1 in 5 (18%) saying that they have had an argument with a partner over an act of disrespect towards the environment.
The top five green bad habits which put Britons off their partner are:
1. Leaving lights on when they leave a room (57%)
2. Leaving the fridge door open for too long (49%)
3. Not recycling / throwing away plastic packaging (47%)
4. Leaving appliances on standby rather than switching them off at the wall (38%)
5. Leaving the tap on while brushing teeth (36%)
Vicki Jobling says that green issues have already joined money and holidays as key battlegrounds in the relationship with her boyfriend:
“I’ve always been aware of the need to be environmentally conscious around the home, so I recycle on a weekly basis and take simple measures such as never leaving taps running unnecessarily.
My boyfriend is much less eco-conscious than me though and it drives me mad when I have to follow him round turning off lights in unoccupied rooms or switching the TV off when he's not even watching it. The worst by far is when he leaves the fridge door open whilst cooking an entire meal!”
