Denmark's succession referendum

1 month ago 07th Oct 14:00

Denmark is to hold a referendum to decide whether the country's rules of succession should be changed.

Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced the vote - which will question whether Denmark's preference for male monarchs should be quashed - on Monday (06.10.08), stating it will take place on June 7 2009.

The referendum has been discussed for the last three years. If the law is changed it would see the first-born of a monarch become heir to the throne, regardless of the child's sex.

At the moment sons take preference, even if they have older sisters.

At least 40 per cent of Denmark's population must go to the polls for the vote to be valid, and at least half must agree with the change for it to be put into motion.

In his announcement, the prime minister stated the country's desire to create an equal society must be led by its royal family.

He said: "It isn't an issue right now that Prince Christian is the first-born child and heir. But we thought it was appropriate to change the law at a point where it wasn't about a particular person and instead about the principle."
