Prince Charles' double party

2 months ago 29th Sep 14:00

Britain's Prince Charles is planning two parties to mark his 60th birthday.

The first lavish bash, to be held at Queen Elizabeth's official London residence Buckingham Palace on November 13, will see the queen host a state banquet for 170 guests.

This will be followed two days later by a more intimate party for the prince's 75 closest friends at the Highgrove estate, Charles' Gloucestershire country retreat.

The royal turns 60 on November 14 and plans to spend his special day relaxing with his sons Prince William and Harry and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles' extravagant party plans come just days after critics attacked the royal family's spending.

Last week, the queen reportedly asked the government for extra funding after aides said there was a £6.5 million black hole in the royal accounts.

Mark Wallace, from the TaxPayers' Alliance pressure group, has blasted Charles' party plans, saying: "It is surprising. Given that earlier this year the queen said she would reign in royal spending due to the credit crunch hitting her subjects, the decision to have two lavish parties is questionable."
