Female royal's throne rights

2 months ago 26th Sep 14:00

The British Government is set to launch a campaign to give female royals the same right to ascend the throne as their male counterparts.

The government is hoping to abolish sexism in the monarchy, which currently gives precedence to male heirs regardless of whether they have an older sister.

Downing Street also plans to abolish a 300-year old rule which bans Catholics becoming monarchs, which would give royals in line for the throne the freedom to marry partners from all religions.

MP Chris Bryant drew up the plans - which are set to be launched if Labour wins the next general election - because he believes the tradition is a breach of the Human Rights Act.

There is a strong argument for reform now, before Prince William or Prince Harry has children.

He said: "There is a strong argument for reform now, before Prince William or Prince Harry has children.

"If William's first child were to be a girl and his second a boy, it would be inconceivable that the daughter should not inherit the crown."

However, a change in the law -which dates back to the 1688 Bill of Rights - would need the agreement of every one of the 52 Commonwealth countries.
