Princes announce Diana celebrations

12-12-2006 14:00

Britain's Princes William and Harry have officially announced plans to commemorate and celebrate the life of their mother Princess Diana.

There will be a memorial service on the tenth anniversary of her death, August 31, 2007, which will be preceded by a charity concert on July 1, which would have been Diana's 46th birthday.

Prince William, 24, said: "We both wanted to put our stamp on it. We want it to represent exactly what our mother would have wanted. So therefore the church service alone isn't enough. We wanted to have this big concert full of energy, full of the sort of fun and happiness, which I know she would have wanted. And on her birthday as well, it's got to be the best birthday present she ever had."

The commemorative show, to be called 'Concert for Diana', will be held at Wembley Stadium.

The concert will feature some of the princess' favourite artists, as well as some of the princes' own favourites.

So far Sir Elton John, Duran Duran, Bryan Ferry, Pharrell Williams, The English National Ballet and Joss Stone have accepted personal invitations from William and Harry to perform. Andrew Lloyd Webber has also agreed to stage a medley of songs from some of his hit West End musicals.

Elton John said: "I applaud Princes William and Harry for choosing to honour their mother with this concert. I am absolutely thrilled to be performing at this great event. Diana was a personal friend and someone I greatly admired for her tireless and enthusiastic work for charity."
