Britain's Queen Elizabeth's Scottish residence is to become energy self-sufficient.
The queen has installed a small hydro-electric plant at Balmoral - where she usually spends her summers - which will generate enough electricity for her estate and a further 1,000 homes in the surrounding area.
A spokesman for Buckingham palace told Britain's The Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Balmoral has always been our beacon in our green work. The royal household is constantly looking at new ways of saving and supplying energy so as to remain as environmentally friendly as possible well into the future."
A date it yet to be set for the property to become fully energy self-sufficient, with one royal official insisting it will be in the "foreseeable future".
Once the system is up and running, Balmoral will be the only royal household that can boast its own ‘comprehensive bio-diversity action plan'.
The hydro-electric plant was installed in a disused sawmill on the estate and generates power from the Gelder Burn - a stream running through the Balmoral grounds that leads to the River Dee.
Hydroelectricity, using a water-driven turbine, has powered the lights at Balmoral since the 20s.
