Queen Elizabeth sends sympathies

Britain's Queen Elizabeth says she is "deeply saddened" by the air crash in Spain yesterday (20.08.08).

The monarch and her husband Prince Philip have expressed their sympathies in a message to Spain's King Juan Carlos after 153 people were killed when their plane crashed at a Madrid airport.

She said: "I was deeply saddened to learn of the dreadful loss of life in the air crash at Barajas airport in Madrid, the news of which has shocked us all.

"Philip joins me in sending our warm and heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those who have died and our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who have been injured.

Spainair Flight JK5022 crashed into the runway at Barajas airport shortly after taking off.

It was bound for popular holiday destination the Canary Islands and was carrying many families with young children.
