An Australian man has been arrested for defamatory comments he allegedly made against Thailand's royal family in a novel published three years ago.
Harry Nicolaides - who wrote 'Verisimilitude' - was detained by officers while trying to fly home from the country's capital Bangkok on Sunday (04.09.08).
The 41-year-old faces charges of lese-majeste, which means offences against the crown, and faces up to 15 years in jail if convicted.
He was refused bail and is being held at the Bangkok Remand Centre.
An arrest warrant was issued in March for a book he wrote in 2005 deemed defamatory to the crown prince.
A warrant for Nicolaides' arrest was issued in March this year, but the accused was said to be unaware of its existence.
Police Lieutenant-Colonel Boonlert Kalayanamit said: "An arrest warrant was issued in March for a book he wrote in 2005 deemed defamatory to the crown prince."
The author's father Takis defended his son, saying he was a good person.
