Amazon.co.uk Review
This unclassifiable but stunningly original film obliterates the walls between teen comedy, science fiction, family drama, horror, and cultural satire--and remains wildly entertaining throughout. Jake Gyllenhaal (October Sky) stars as Donnie, a borderline-schizophrenic adolescent for whom there is no difference between the signs and wonders of reality (a plane crash that decimates his house) and hallucination (a man-sized, reptilian rabbit who talks to him). Obsessed with the science of time travel and acutely aware of the world around him, Donnie is isolated by his powers of analysis and the apocalyptic visions that no one else seems to share. The debut feature of writer-director Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a shattering, hypnotic work that sets its own terms and gambles--rightfully so, as it turns out--that a viewer will stay aboard for the full ride. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko and the Smurfs Big Adventure   January 31, 2009

Emotional, profound and intense. Funny and quick-witted. Most of all it's incredibly watchable. An excellent script and excellent acting, interesting cinematography all add up to a great film.
Every scene in the film is pure gold with many memorable quotes and ultimately everything seems to mean something, whether there really is a definite planned 'story' doesn't matter, simply because so much connects and it's more about what you feel than what you know. I could talk about this film all day but I suggest you watch it yourself and draw your own conclusion.

5 out of 5 stars Good Revamp   August 14, 2010

Not many extras from the original but the BlueRay clarity makes it worth buying, one nice touch is the inclusion of the original on an extra dvd whilst the added scenes about THE PHILOSOPHY OF TIME TRAVEL By Roberta Sparrow is brilliant and adds that extra touch.
Anyone who is a fan of the original won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great film - Original cut is far better than the Director's cut   July 24, 2010

This is a great film, different from the usual Hollywood fare and deserves its cult status. All the actors are great and the supporting cast (including Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze) give understated yet brilliant performances. However, for me, the original cut is far better than the Director's cut, and I would recommend anyone watching the film for the first time to watch the original version first.

The Director's cut takes away rather than adds to the story, tries to explain what doesn't need explaining, and make the film unecessarily long (the original is long enough already!).

An original, fantastic, scrupulous, wierd, mindblowing movie! Jake Gyllenhall is absolutely amazing in this movie.
