Amazon.co.uk Review
On its original release, the one area of The Road To Perdition that pretty much every critic rallied behind was the stunning cinematography. The work of the late, great Conrad Hall, the sheer look of the film is quite brilliant. And inevitably, it’s the first to benefit from a high definition upgrade.

But it’s not the only thing in Sam Mendes’ second movie, the one he made after his Oscar-snaring American Beauty. For The Road To Perdition is a quietly impressive movie, one not just notable for Tom Hanks in the lead role playing against type as a hit man. There’s also arguably the last great performance from Paul Newman, for instance, as well as the impressive work behind the camera from Mendes. And while the film doesn’t scale the heights that others in the genre have managed, it’s an interesting production nonetheless.

Its Blu-ray upgrade has been well handled, too. The picture quality here is rich and appreciated, with Hall’s photography draping the screen in tone and detail. The excellent audio track makes the most too of a wonderful score from Thomas Newman, and in keeping with the rest of the production, it’s quiet and assured, rather than overt and noisy.

The Road To Perdition still has its problems, and a perfect movie it isn’t. But it is a classy one, a film that’s absorbing and interesting, and right now, one that’s never looked better than its Blu-ray release. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable - passionate and emotional   July 28, 2006

What can viewers say about Tom Hanks? From watching this film there is only one word to describe his acting abilities: sensational. A shame he didn't receive a thoroughly deserved Oscar for his portrayal of the mobster Michael Sullivan in this passionate Sam Mendes picture

Hanks stars in the Oscar winning (Best cinematography) 2002 crime drama about a man who deals with the pressure of losing his family and his much loved job. He has to escape from the mob world and deal with the pressure of looking after his troubled son Michael Jr.

The story in simply stunning. It creates passion, emotion and tension in every scene and fits perfectly into the genre. A film centred on passion and loyalty delivers memorable scenes. High emotion runs riot when Michael Jr discovers what his father's job involves. But the ending also creates as much passion as the whole film.

There are many religious ideologies but forth from the director of American Beauty Sam Mendes to create the passion for the early 1930's showing how people felt about the situations and how much it meant. Religion is an important issue here, showing how people felt and reacted to different situations. And that's probably why the film was so successful because it was able to dive deep within the time and capture brilliantly the essence of the 1930's. The way people went around shooting each other, the business dealings, funerals etc are all contained within the film.

Older audiences will be able to appreciate the ideologies put forth but must have a strong heart to deal with the highly emotionally driven plot.

The mode address is also worth notification as the characters all wear very fashionable clothes reflective of the time. Being part of a rich culture Hanks and his fellow mobsters wore fashionable stereotype costumes looking very classy and typical gangsters.

The acting is simply stunning. Hanks steals the show once again but credit must go to Hoechilen who deals with so many emotional situations. As a young boy he must cope with all the new happenings surrounding him and Hoechilen pulls it off brilliantly. He is able to capture the true emotions of the character brilliantly to make audiences sympathize with him.
Jude Law was also terrific as one of the central hitmen. His ironic laid back style towards his profession is definitely notable and breathtaking.
Craig and Newman also perform with their hearts on their sleeves as father and son.

Confrontations between the characters are very well used. Having all the protagonists confront each other after different situations shows how each person reacts to the other and how they now have to deal with their lives.

Passionate and emotional, a must see

5 out of 5 stars Perfect transfer for perfect film!   July 3, 2010

Transfer is beautiful! Colors are rich even though the general color pallette is more monochromatic. The cinematography really shines here on blu. There's no heavy DNR and flesh tones are spot on. Audio is TOP NOTCH!! The music really surrounds you and guns are booming, while the ocean and bird sounds are subtle and realistic.

GET THIS ON BLU NOW!!

5 out of 5 stars Road to Perdition is a riveting and superb gangster film!   June 21, 2003

This film about a gangster whose eldest son witnesses him committing a murder for his boss then finds himself and his boy on the run from the father-like boss he devoted himself to and the mob with a sadistic and relentless killer on their heels is a beautiful one to watch. Paul Newman is fantastic and steals the acting honours as Michael Sullivan's boss Rooney who became the father figure to Sullivan. In fact the rest of the cast are on good form too especially Tom Hanks who exposes a new darker side to his portfolio.

The cinematography is extraordinary again from the maestro Conrad L. Hall who lets the camera glide through the film. Another bonus to this ravishing film is that you can almost 'feel' the time in which it is set. And it's all thanks to the wonderful production design and the superb cinematography.

It's not quite 'The Godfather' but it's not that far off. Let's hope Sam Mendes can produce more like this and his previous masterpiece 'American Beauty'.

5 out of 5 stars Best gangster flick since The Godfather   November 3, 2002

Tom Hanks again enhances his credentials as a first class actor for the incredible "Road to Perdition". He moves away from the typical sensitive romantic man to a hardened husband and father who must desperately separate his working life and his home life to preserve at least a little of his soul. However, when the two worlds collide with two ear-splitting gun-shots, Hanks must leave his previous life behind and begin a journey of sadness and self-revelation as he seeks simultaneously a violent revenge on his enemies and a deeper relationship with his son.

The cinematography and music add an extra depth of atmosphere to an already chilling environment. The use of shadow at key moments highlights the distance between good and evil and how we all veer from one to the other at some stage in our lives. Musical dynamics ensure tension as the audience becomes fearful of a shock around the next corner. Sometimes we may become lulled into a false sense of security by the seemingly calm surroundings, but in a film such as this, calmness can only ever be a deception.

This is certainly a film to be watched more than once. There is so much imagery to be dwelt upon and character development to be considered, that it will be necessary to buy the DVD as soon as it is released!

One of the best (if not THE best) performances of Tom Hanks. Great gangster movie! Do not expect spectacular mob wars but a great inside into human nature.
