Lisa Maxwell has quit 'The Bill'.

The 45-year-old actress has announced she is to stop playing DI Sam Nixon after seven years on the ITV1 soap and will depart from screens in an explosive storyline in September.

Lisa, who handed in her notice last year, said: "I've loved every minutes of my seven years on 'The Bill' but feel I have taken the character Sam as far as I can. It is time to move on to new challenges.

"When people start referring to you as the longest-standing female cast member it is probably time to take the hint.

"It was a difficult decision but I leave with happy memories of a wonderful team. I wish them luck."

Lisa's departure is the latest blow to hit the struggling show.

It was recently announced the police drama is to be cut from two episodes a week to one, and shifted from its current 8pm slot to a later time.

Like you, I've watched The Bill since the beginning as The Wooden Tops. Unfortunately, I think it is going the way of once good dramas and I've now stopped watching.
