Doctor Who will have two assistants in the new series.

The new Doctor, played by Matt Smith, will pick up his first assistant, Amy Pond, and whisk her off into space - unaware she was about to get married.

After realising his mistake, he returns to earth to pick up her fiance, Rory Williams, taking them both away to fight enemies including the Daleks and Weeping Angels.

It's a good job that police box is bigger on the inside than out because it's going to be a tight squeeze in there this year.

In addition to Amy and Rory, a third companion is thought to join them later in the series.

Meanwhile, it has been rumoured that 'Hotel Rwanda' star Sophie Okonedo has joined 'Doctor Who' and will feature in the second episode of the series, which is due in spring.

A source said: "Getting Sophie on board is a huge coup for the BBC."
